Transportation Modeling Synchro ® and SimTraffic ®

Synchro Software and its suite of associated applications is a traffic signal timing software that assists engineers and transportation planners to design, model, optimize, simulate and animate signalized and unsignalized intersections (including roundabouts).  Synchro is a deterministic model which means the results are based entirely given the input values.  The results of Synchro such as selected measures of effectiveness and Level of Service are based on analysis procedures defined in the latest Highway Capacity Manual.  In contract, SimTraffic is a stochastic model which processes randomness in the traffic conditions.  SimTraffic is a microscopic model used to simulate a wide variety of traffic controls based on inputs within the Synchro model.  Each vehicle in the traffic system is individually tracked through the model and comprehensive operational measures of effectiveness are collected on every vehicle during the simulation.  The results can be compared to different scenarios to determine the effectiveness of various capacity and operational improvements.  Synchro and SimTraffic are default tools used by the majority of agencies within the Metropolitan Washington area.

VISSIM

VISSIM is a time-based, stochastic simulation of individual vehicles used primarily when there is interaction of various modes, including buses (including drop offs and dwells), high pedestrian volumes and train interaction, such as grade crossing activity or light rail interaction with vehicular traffic.  Comprehensive measures of effectiveness are computed for each vehicle (and mode) in the model for every time step of model simulation.  VISSIM has the ability to collect system wide measurements as well as movement, approach, link, route, area, and other measures of effectiveness.  The VISSIM software is more capable of simulating realistic driver behavior within a roadway network under evaluation.  VISSIM has replaced the freeway simulation tools created by the Federal Highway Administration such as CORSIM to evaluate freeway operations in the Metropolitan Washington area.
